Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
Would you like to drive the new command rig for the Skamokawa Fire Department? They are looking for some more volunteers. Currently there are 10 Skamokawa residents who volunteer for an area that extends from Brooks Slough to the top of KM and throughout Skamokawa and the Skamokawa valley
Three of the 10 volunteers qualify as medical personnel.
Last Saturday, most of the department took a little time out to talk about why they volunteer and show off the new command rig that was donated to them by Riverside Fire in Chehalis. The vehicle needed some lights, lettering, and very little work. It's ready to go. It will be used for aid calls.
"It's in excellent shape and not too many miles on it," volunteer Kay Walters said.
Why volunteer? Everyone had different reasons.
"I always wanted to be a fireman," volunteer Brian O'Connor said. "So it's kind of a way to do that."
"If somebody doesn't step up, who is going to do it?" Walters added. "We've got to do it."
"I just like to stay busy," volunteer Austin Smith said.
"I'd just like to help out the community as much as I can," volunteer Brandon Ennis said.
Volunteering isn't limited to 18 and over. Orion Daugherty, who is a junior at Wahkiakum High School, joined the department recently.
