Bigger, faster, stronger.
The visiting Kalama Chinooks showed themselves to be just that in a 35-2 football win over the Wahkiakum Mules last Friday.
The state's top ranked Class 2B team took advantage of their own big plays and Mule mistakes to claim the Central League win.
Still, the Mules played hard the whole game and never let down.
"I am really, really proud with the attitude of the kids," commented Mule Coach Eric Hansen. "Our kids battled all night long. They didn't back down."
Kalama jumped ahead on a short touchdown pass seven minutes into the game. Just over two minutes later, running back Jacob Herz ripped off a 66-yard touchdown run, and Kalama led 14-0 after one quarter.
The Mules nearly got on the score board in the second quarter. Zach Brown broke free of the Kalama defense on a pass route but couldn't wrap his hands around a pass over his head. Kalama scored again on a 55-yard pass play and led 21-0 at halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Kalama added two more scores in the fourth, one a 68-yard pass and the other on a six-yard throw.
The Mules got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when the defense forced Kalama to throw the ball away on a pass play in their own endzone, leading to a two-point safety and the final 35-0 score.
The Chinooks gained 181 yards rushing and 181 yards passing, for 362 total yards of offense. Alex Dyer completed 15 of 21 passes for three touchdowns and one interception.
The Mules gained 176 yards rushing and 23 yards passing for 199 total yards of offense. James Anderson had 68 yards on 16 carries and Z. Brown gained 61 yards on 10 carries. Quarterback Lucas Brown ran for 35 yards and completed five of 14 passes, with two interceptions.
Z. Brown led the defense with 16 tackles. Evan Quigley had 11; L. Brown, Casey Wilson and Ashden Niemeyer eight each; Tristan Collupy six; Anderson and Chance Cothren four each; Aaron West and Randall Ecklund three each, and KC Beery two. Quigley intercepted a Chinook pass.
