Jaime Herrera Beutler invites SW WA veterans to preserve their stories

U.S. Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler announced she is inviting Southwest Washington veterans to take part in a live event on October 16 to record their stories to be preserved in the Library of Congress.

Herrera-Beutler is partnering with the Veterans History Project to honor the men and women from Southwest Washington who have served our nation in the military.

“Congress created the Veterans History Project, and it is a great honor to offer its services to Southwest Washington veterans where these individuals’ experiences and stories will be preserved,” said Herrera-Beutler. “This is a small way we can show our veterans that we acknowledge all they’ve been through by listening to their accounts of war, thank them for their sacrifice for our country’s freedom, and honor them by allowing future generations to hear directly from our nation’s heroes.”

All Southwest Washington veterans are invited to participate and share their stories at this Vancouver-area event. Those who wish to participate, should RSVP by contacting Louise Fendrich in Herrera-Beutler’s Vancouver office at 360-695-6292 or louise.fendrich@mail.house.gov.

Additional details on the time and location of the event will be forthcoming.

Herrera-Beutler will be partnering with the Veterans History Project whose mission is to collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of American wartime veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war and the sacrifices made for our freedom.

At the event, Herrera-Beutler, her staff, and members of the military community will be conducting one-on-one, 30-minute interviews with Southwest Washington veterans about their wartime experiences. The interviews will then be submitted for preservation as part of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Its collection can be viewed and more information is available about the Veterans History Project at http://www.loc.gov/vets.
