Mules beat Vikings, face No. 1 Chinooks

The visiting Wahkiakum Mules used a balanced offense to defeat the Mossyrock Vikings 20-7 last Friday.

The Mules gained 175 yards on the ground and 103 in the air while holding the Vikings to 82 rushing yards and 57 passing yards.

The Mules scored twice in the second quarter to lead 14-0 at halftime. First, quarterback Lucas Brown completed a drive with a one-yard plunge for a 6-0 lead; he kicked the conversion to boost the score to 7-0 at 3:49.

The Mules got the ball back quickly, and James Anderson scored on a 23-yard run. Brown kicked the conversion for a 14-0 halftime lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, Anderson's one-yard touchdown put the Mules up 20-0 at 11:24 of the fourth quarter. The conversion failed.

Although happy with the result, Mule Coach Eric Hansen found room for improvement.

"We had too many penalties (eight for 55 yards), and we were in scoring position in the red zone two times and didn't score," he said.

Anderson led the Mule running attack with 116 yards; Zach Brown gained 58. L. Brown completed nine of 14 passes for 103 yards and no interceptions. Anderson and K.C. Beery each caught three passes; Z. Brown had two and Chance Cothren one.

Zach Brown led the defense with 17 tackles; Tristan Collupy made 11; Anderson, Ashden Niemeyer and Evan Quigley each had nine; and L. Brown seven. Kaden Anderson intercepted a Viking pass.

This Friday, 7 p.m., the Mules host the Kalama Chinooks, who are undefeated and the top ranked Class 2B team in the state.

"They have an outstanding quarterback, extremely fast running back, and a receiver who can catch anything," Hansen said. "We'll be ready."
