Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
The 3rd Annual Warriors and Widows Salmon Derby will be held August 30-31, according to Cathlamet area resident and VFW member, Bob Roche, who is organizing the event.
"We believe it is the only salmon derby in the nation specifically for men and women who were injured while wearing the uniform of the United States," said Roche. He added, "We want to provide a unique Northwest experience for the Warriors and Widows, many of whom are from other other parts of the country and have never fished or even seen a large salmon.
"It was amazing last year. The word spread and it seemed like the entire community stepped up and wanted to be involved. People have donated their boats, equipment and expertise, as well as lodging and food for our special guests," said Roche.
This year 51 soldiers and family members along with 29 boats and skippers have donated their time, boats, equipment, and knowledge of the Columbia River salmon fishing to make this derby a success.
Mr. Roche noted, "This salmon derby is how Cathlamet says thank you to the men and women who wear the uniform and keep us safe. One of our primary objectives is for the derby to become a model for other communities.”
