Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
Last weekend, Hobie Cat enthusiasts returned to Vista Park in Skamokawa for their annual event, recently renamed the Todd Christensen Memorial Regatta. The blustery weather made for great fun and a bit of drama with a collision and trip to the hospital, according to a blog report. Everyone was okay but that was the end of competition for those two catamarans, at least this Saturday and Sunday. The race on Sunday took boaters downriver for miles and despite being out for nearly three hours, the first team to land won the event by two whole seconds. One of the regular attendees of the event, a man named Bob, said that he'd been coming to Skamokawa since the 1980s. The people that love the Hobie Cat are getting older, he admitted, but they were hoping that a new, younger generation would discover them and keep the sport alive. Photos by Diana Zimmerman.
