Mules top T-wolves, Loggers, lose to Tigers

The Wahkiakum Mules baseball team is off to a good start this season with two wins and a loss this week.

Last Thursday the team was scheduled to travel, but the wet weather caused poor conditions in Morton, and a decision was made to move the game against Morton/White Pass to Cathlamet. The Mules won 15-3.

James Anderson pitched the first three innings and got the win. He struck out four and allowed four hits and two runs. Luke Brown finished the game, pitching two innings. He struck out six batters and allowed one run.

On offense, Anderson hit two doubles and drove in five runs. Ashden Niemeyer hit a double and had two RBI. Hank Ferguson was 2-3 at bat and had three RBI. Beau Carlson had two RBI and Zach Brown had one.

"Offensively, we had a great approach at the plate and made great contact," Coach Marc Niemeyer said. "Defensively, our pitchers threw strikes and kept the ball down and let their teammates make plays."

On Monday, the team traveled to Onalaska and beat the Loggers easily, 12-0.

Anderson struck out 14 batters in six innings and got the win.

"Offensively," Coach Niemeyer said, "we didn't string anything together until the fifth inning. We exploded from there."

L. Brown hit a three-run home run and Terris Record hit a two-run home run. A. Niemeyer was 4-5 at bat and drove in two runs. Carlson and Ferguson finished the game with one RBI apiece.

Napavine came to town on Tuesday and beat the Mules 9-0.

There was no score until the top of the fifth inning, when the Tigers scored five runs. They did it four more times in the seventh inning.

"We have to learn to persevere when the chips are down," Coach Niemeyer said. "We will get back to work and still have the same goals."
