Mules start 2B state tourney action this evening
The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team had a few of their fans on edge in Saturday's regional game with the Davenport Gorillas, but grit and great shooting led to a momentum shift and a 60-56 overtime win.
The Lady Mules spent much of the game playing a kind of catch up, finishing behind Davenport at the end of three quarters. They pulled even in the fourth when Peyton Souvenir landed a three point shot from way out to tie the game at 47 with 47 seconds left in the game.
The crowd erupted when Savannah Burdick and Macie Elliott hit back to back threes at the start of the four minute overtime period.
The Lady Mules never looked back.
"It wasn't the best first half," Coach Robbie Garrett said, "but I was really happy with the girls. I thought they kept working hard and believed the entire time. We hit some huge shots and just had a couple more hustle plays than they did down the stretch. Once we got to overtime we knew it was our game. We love overtime! Most kids are thinking about how they should have won it in regulation, we are simply thinking, 'This is our time!'"
Souvenir scored 27 points. She also had eight rebounds and five assists. Burdick added 15 points. Elliott had 11 points and five steals. Ellie Leitz scored four points and pulled down six boards. Sydney Hansen had two points. Maddy Mace finished the game with one point and five rebounds.
Davenport 13 13 12 9 9 56
Lady Mules 11 8 16 12 13 60
The win gave the team a bye for the first day of the State 2B tournament which began Wednesday in Spokane. They face the winner of the Dayton/Mabton game Thursday (today) at 9 p.m. in the Spokane Arena.
