Lady Mules rack up four wins this week

The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team won four games this week to bring their record to 8-0 league, 11-0 overall. Adna’s loss on Tuesday night to Kalama moved the Mules into first place in the Central 2B league.

Last Wednesday, the Lady Mules easily beat Pe Ell in a game at home, 77-11.

“I thought the girls played awesome team basketball,” Coach Rob Garrett said. “I love to see a game where everyone scores. I was really happy with how hard the girls worked even against a weaker opponent.”

Macie Elliott led the team with 28 points and six steals. Peyton Souvenir scored 12 points. She also had eight rebounds, 10 assists, six steals, and two blocks. Maddy Mace and Sydney Hansen added 10 points apiece. Hansen also had six rebounds and seven steals. Savannah Burdick had five points. Charlie Ashe and Mckensi Fluckiger scored three points each. Ellie Leitz, Paige Mace, and Jansi Merz added two points apiece.

On Friday, the Mules began a two day road trip with a win against Morton/White Pass, 75-27.

Souvenir scored 29 points and had six assists, seven steals and three blocks. Elliott had 16 points and Burdick added 13. Hansen scored four points. Leitz, M. Mace, and Fluckiger added three points each. Ashe and P. Mace had two points each.

After the win, the team headed north before catching an early ferry to Friday Harbor on Saturday morning. They beat the Wolverines 57-43.

“We didn’t play our game most of the time,” Garrett said. “I thought we worried about things out of our control. Charlie (Ashe) stepped up huge on defense in the second half shutting down their best player. Offensively Savannah (Burdick) stepped up as well hitting 3 threes in the fourth quarter.”

Burdick led the team with 17 points, hitting five from outside the arc. Souvenir added 16 points, seven rebounds, eight assists, and nine steals. Elliott had 12 points and eight rebounds. M. Mace scored five points. Hansen had four points and Ashe added three.

On Tuesday, the Lady Mules beat Onalaska 72-25.

Souvenir had a triple double with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. She also had six steals and two blocks. Elliott also had 16 points and added seven steals. Burdick had 15 points and five steals. M. Mace scored 10 points. Ashe had seven points, Fluckiger scored six points, and P. Mace had two.

“I wasn’t very happy with our defense in the first half but I was really happy with how we responded after halftime,” Garrett said. “The girls continue to play very unselfish basketball. It makes it really fun for everyone on the court.”

The Lady Mules play Rainier at home tonight (Thursday).
