Lady Mules add two wins; Souvenir hits 1,000

The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team added two more to their win column this week with two games at home. On Friday, they methodically took down a tall, tough Kalama team, 74-49.

With a little over a minute left in the first quarter, Peyton Souvenir added her name to the short list of Mule athletes to score more than 1,000 points during their high school career. She finished the game with 32 points, 13 rebounds, seven steals, five assists and one block.

Savannah Burdick had a big night too, hitting five from the three point line. She ended the game with 16 points. Macie Elliott added 13 points and nine rebounds. Ellie Leitz had six points; Sydney Hansen scored four, and Maddy Mace added three.

"It was a huge win for us that not many people outside of our team thought we would get," Coach Rob Garrett said. "Kalama is a top five team in the state, in my opinion. The girls played awesome defense and were the most mentally checked in I have ever seen them. It was a great team win, everyone did their job. Whether the girls were on the floor or taking a break, everyone worked for one common goal.

"Peyton obviously had a huge night and big congratulations to her for reaching such an awesome milestone. Savannah stepped up going five for 12 from the three point line. Also everyone stepped up down low, keeping their bigs off the glass. I think that game shows what we are all capable of doing when we all work together for the same goal. I'm super proud of these girls after an awesome win."

Mace hit three of her own, and finished the game with 11 points. Elliott had 10 points, Hansen scored four, and Charlie Ashe added one. Ellie Leitz pulled down seven rebounds.

"I was happy to get out of there with the win which is always the goal," Coach Garrett said. "I thought Maddy and Savannah both hit some big shots for us tonight at the right time. We need to anticipate better on defense. Peyton distributed the ball well, also."
