On Saturday, a crowd of people braved the rain to see the Christmas lights come on at the Wahkiakum County Courthouse.
They huddled under awnings next door and across the street, beneath the tent or umbrellas. Some just stood in the rain, which came and went.
The event began at 4:30 p.m. The lights were set on a timer for 5 p.m., and despite the chill and the wet, the congregation was smiling and laughing. Patient.
Shops were open around town and there were vendors in the Cathlamet Hotel lobby. Some took advantage of the downtime to look for Christmas gifts.
Rob Stockhouse stood in for Sheriff Mark Howie, who couldn't be there. Stockhouse thanked everyone for coming and invited them to join in as they sang Christmas carols.
Shortly after the lights came on, Santa Claus arrived in his traditional red fire engine. And he kept going, all the way to the Community Center, where he was met by a throng of his fans, who were already lined up and ready to meet him.
Santa asked each of his visitors, old and young, if they had been good or bad this year.
As if he didn't already know.
If you're hoping for a nice man for Christmas, Santa says they are all out. I know. I asked.
