School district plans logging work

Vocational Agriculture teacher, Kyle Hurley attended October’s Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday as a representative of the Farm Forest Advisory Board. He also talked about the Career Technical Education Program (CTE) and plans for a greenhouse on school property.

According to Hurley, the advisory board had received an offer of about $700/1,000 board feet for some of the Douglas fir on Farm Forest property, which belongs to the school district. The board thought that it might be a good time to log 10 acres to take advantage of the good price. Their only condition was that the money be used for students and not go into the general fund for structural needs.

“They would like to see those funds go to CTE and whatever else the students and teachers could use,” Hurley said.

After some discussion the school board decided that it would be a good time to have the farm forest surveyed and asked Superintendent Bob Garrett to put out a call for bids for logging. The board will make a decision when they have that information.
