The Kalama Chinooks exploded for five third quarter touchdowns to roll to a 48-6 win over the Wahkiakum Mules last Friday.
The host Chinooks led 8-0 at the end of the first quarter as Jacob Herz scored on a 63-yard run.
In the second quarter, the Mules put together a scoring drive which Hank Ferguson completed on a 3-yard run. The conversion attempt failed, and the Mules trailed their hosts 8-6 at halftime.
The floodgates came open in the third quarter as the Chinooks scored on runs ranging from 26 to 95 yards. They also shut down the Mule offense with three pass interceptions in the period. A 60-yard touchdown completed the scoring in the fourth quarter.
The Mules finished the game with 260 yards of offense, 164 yards rushing and 96 passsing. They gained 46 yards on the ground and 55 in the air in the second quarter. Kalama finished with 480 yards total offense, 459 rushing and 21 passing.
Hank Ferguson led the Mule rushing attack with 105 yards on 20 carries. Zach Brown gained 31 and James Anderson had 29. Sophomore quarterback Lucas Brown completed 15 of 21 passes, with four interceptions, for 96 yards. James Anderson caught five passes for 31 yards; Ferguson caught four for 31 yards; Cody Terpsma caught one for 30 yards, and Bryce Good had one for seven yards.
On defense, Zach Brown made seven tackles and assists; Ferguson five, Lucas Brown four, Anderson three, Good three, Terris Record three, Ashden Niemeyer two, Dylan Ahmed two, Evan Quigley two and Gage Horman one. Zach Brown intercepted a Chinook pass and recovered a fumble, and Quigley batted down a pass.
The road doesn't get any easier, for the Mules travel to Toledo this Friday to face the undefeated and sixth ranked Indians. The Mules return home October 21 to host Winlock for their final home game of the season. It will be the Mules' homecoming game.
