Skamokawa News
WEEKEND--We ended last week with a gorgeous day on Friday, with temperatures just the way I like them, with a bit of crispness in the air but lots of sunshine. However, the rains did appear on Saturday and some on Sunday, which came with mixed reviews, as some were ready for the rain, the Fall foods, a roaring fire and the great book reading weather, while some of us would have liked just a little more sunshine in order to enjoy the first weekend in October and its activities. It looks like a mixed bag for the week, so keep those umbrellas handy!
SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Oct. 6-12 are Matt Helms, Jeff Baldwin, Justin McClain, Jessie Havens, Collin Montgomery, Ron D. Cothren, Kristina Heiner, Tyler Cothren, Lisa Sauer, Ivy Lou Vik, Kevin Vik, Peter and Paul LaBerge, Erin Phillips, Cindy Turner, Lauren Brockway, Lisa Frink, Doug Manary and to my only granddaughter, Tessa Jane Sechler, who is leaving the teenage years behind already--amazing! Happy Birthday everyone!
I don't know how I missed it, but somehow I did, so here are some belated birthday wishes to Marissa Apperson, as she turned 21 recently, so here's hoping she had a wonderful day on her special day! Also belated birthday wishes are being extened to Anita Mosteller and Dave Gehrman!
Happy Anniversary wishes this week go out to Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Wright and Mr. and Mrs. Marty Kuller. Enjoy!
Belated anniversary wishes go out to Bruce and Deanna (Farnsworth) Dachtler as they celebrated their big day this past Monday, which I didn't know about until it was too late, so here's hoping they had a great day!
SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY--Susan Brown wants me to remind you that a special anniversary gathering will be held on Oct. 15 at 1 p.m., at the Norse Hall on Puget Island, as the family celebrates her parents, Ralph and Jean Kenner's 70th anniversary! A hearty congratulations to them on this upcoming celebration!
FREE MOVIES AGAIN--We were happy to learn that there will once again be free movies at the Cathlamet Community Center, and they begin tomorrow night, Oct. 7. Showtimes are always at 7 p.m. This Friday, it's an adult/youth show. We can't actually name the movie but you can check with the center and they'll fill you in. They hand out free popcorn or you can bring your own snacks, and better yet, have a pizza delivered from Sharon's Pizza Mill at 6:45 p.m., and enjoy that right there at the center while you watch the movie. Call ahead to take advantage of this service at 795-3311. As always, all children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
THIS IS IT--It's time for the new exhibit to begin in the River Life Interpretive Center located on the second floor of the historic Redmen Hall, so come down and check out this new exhibt which begins this Saturday, Oct. 8. If you would like to meet and greet the various artists, come down for a reception in their honor from 1 to 3 p.m., that day. There will be a lot of local artists, like Ruth Doumit, Noreen Fitts and Mike Rees, to name just a few, so head this way for a wide variety of works from this varied group of artists.
THIS SATURDAY --Don't forget, it's bingo time at the Norse Hall on Puget Island this Saturday night, Oct. 8, with doors open at 5:30, and games beginning at 6 p.m. Here's wishing you good luck in winning one of those cash prizes! Don't forget to buy some goodies!
MULES--The Wahkiakum Mule football team will be headed to Kalama this Friday night, Oct. 7, so here's wishing them a good game! The Lady Mules will be at the R. A. Long tournament on Saturday, Oct. 8, with only the varsity playing at that time. The Mules Cross Country team will be at Woodland next Wedneday, Oct. 12, so here's to all our teams doing well and not winding up with any injuries for anybody.
NICE DONATION--At half time during the last Mules football game, the Bank of the Cascades made a very nice, $2500 donation to WHS which will help with various costs and expenses for the athletic teams, so that's really a terrific gift. Many thanks to the B of C!
THIS SUNDAY--There will be a special concert performance at the River of Life Assembly of God Church in Cathlamet this coming Sunday, Oct. 9 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and everyone is invited to attend. Performing for you will be Sally O'Connor of "Improbable People Ministries." For those of you with computers, you can check out her other performaces just by typing in her name and the I.P.M. addition.
NOT QUITE YET--You've probably already figured out that Daylight Savings Time is not happening this month, but next month, so you won't have to deal with that until Nov. 6. Of course, most of us change our clocks on Saturday evening before going to bed, so on Nov. 5, you will Fall back one hour. I'm sure we'll all enjoy getting back that extra hour of sleep that we lost in the Spring!
IN THE WORKS--The making of the Haunted House at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds has already begun and if you'd like to help out Jason Rainey, or donate items to put in it, then give him a call in the evenings and let him know: 795-0641. Remember, it is going to be free this year so no child has to miss the fun, but donations will gladly be accepted. This is a lot of work and we certainly appreciate all of Jason's hard work, and that of his crew!
SKAMOKAWA METHODIST CHURCH--I had another call about the Harvest Bazaar Sale at the Methodist Church that will take place next Saturday, Oct. 15, so if you're interested in going, or taking part, be sure to write the date down now. If you'd like to rent a table and set up your own things, be sure to call: 795-0628. There will be new things, old things, food things and everything in between, so check out the USMC located on the road leading into Skamokawa Vista Park.
VISITOR--I was told that a former pastor of the Methodist church from the 70s was here in town recently, and I hope those that knew Rick Gossett back then, were able to visit with him a bit. Beings I didn't move to Skamokawa until the 80s, I was not acquainted with him, but hopefully he found some folks to chat with while he was here. He certainly picked a nice place to stay, as he was right in the midst of things when he stayed at the Twin Gables B & B, with owners, Kathleen and Stevan Morgain as his hosts.
WRAP UP--From the pictures I saw, it looked like the Covered Bridge Dinner held last Saturday in Grays River, was a big success. First time dinner guests, David and Connie Shrum of Hermiston, Ore., said that the salmon and ham were delicious, as well as everything that went with them, especially the squash and beets, and that the music provided by Jeffrey Reynolds and Andrew Emlen was terrific. The youngsters that helped with the serving and such were also a real delight, and everyone seemed to have a wonderful time, so in spite of some rain later on in the evening, it was dry inside the wonderfully set up interior and everyone seemed to have a terrific evening. Good job to all of those who are involved in putting this together, as it's a huge undertaking to tackle one these kinds of fund raisers, (logistics, decorations, food, prizes, entertaiment, etc.) so they are to be commended for their efforts, and I'm sure they certainly appreciate all those that were able to come and support this 4-H fund raiser. Unfortunately, I had a very important, out of town appointment and couldn't attend, but maybe next year!
NOISY--If you're one of those people who live along SR 4, which has had some work done on it recently, you will relate to the rumbling noise now heard day and night as people travel to and fro. Yes indeed, those center rumble strips, which indicate you are crossing the center line, are making lots of noise, even at my house, so obviously, there are way too many people who can't seem to keep their vehicles in their own lane! While I can't say I enjoy the sound, which you can hear from a mile away in any direction from our place, it's a good wake up call for all those on the road to keep your vehicles between the lines and not over the line, as the sound it makes, really makes a racket!
