Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

Terry Dean Norberg

Terry Dean Norberg was born in Walla Walla, Washington to Hjalmar Tilman Norberg and Ruth Evelyn Kinsey on May 15, 1944. A few months later, the family, which included older brother Jack, returned to Chehalis, WA. In 1950, the family moved to Skamokawa, WA in Wahkiakum County where Terry attended Skamokawa Grade School and then Wahkiakum High School in nearby Cathlamet. He graduated in the class of 1962. He attended Lower Columbia College and then Central Washington State College, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1968. He taught elementary school for one year at Fords Prairie Elementary School in Centralia, WA, before returning to Central to complete his Master of Education in instructional media. In the fall of 1971, he accepted a position as the school librarian at Washington Middle School in the Olympia School District. When Capital High School opened in the fall of 1975, Terry took the job as the media specialist. He stayed at Capital until his full retirement in the spring of 2008. In addition to his classroom and teacher support role, he worked with students on taping, editing and producing Capital News Service, the in-school news program. He also taped untold numbers of school events and continued taping Capital Cougar football games through the 2015 football season. He remained a most faithful Cougar fan.

On May 15, 1982, a friend introduced Terry to Andrea Berg at a gathering for his birthday. The initial spark remained, and they were married on August 13, 1983 in Kent, WA. Five years later, their daughter, Kristen Jayne, was born. Over the years, the family pursued their favorite activity of long summer camping trips throughout the western US and Canada, venturing as far north as Jasper National Park, as far east as Michigan and Illinois where they also visited family, and as far south as Arizona and New Mexico. National park visits were a priority, visiting as many as seven national parks in one trip. While Kristen attended Washington State University, they enjoyed getting acquainted with Pullman and the Palouse Country of southeast Washington, and Terry became a new kind of Cougar fan. After Kristen moved to Sacramento, CA in 2015, they enjoyed trips to visit her and explore the region.

Terry’s lifelong interest in photography never waned. In recent years, he found a new outlet for this by sharing his favorite shots on Facebook. He also enjoyed using it to reconnect with so many old friends and former students.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Terry is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Sue Norberg; brother-in-law, Ken Berg; and many Norberg and Kinsey cousins.

Andrea and Kristen would like to extend their grateful thanks to all the doctors, nurses and other specialists at Capital Medical Center who took such wonderful care of him during his brief illness and worked so hard to try to restore him to health. They are also so thankful for all the support from so many family members and friends.

A memorial celebration of Terry’s life will be held at the Capital High School commons at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22, 2016. Donations in the name of Terry Norberg can be made to the Capital High School Foundation, 2707 Conger Avenue NW, Olympia, WA 98502.
