Mules plow through South Bend 34-14

The Wahkiakum Mule running attack overwhelmed visiting South Bend for a 34-14 non-league football victory last Friday.

The Mules ran for 361 yards on the ground while keeping the visitors in check with 197 of their own.

The Mules mounted a long drive in the first quarter and capped it with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Luke Brown to Bryce Good with 2:26 to go. Brown kicked the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

With five minutes left in the second quarter, Brown scored on a one-yard plunge; the conversion failed, leaving the Mules ahead 13-0.

South Bend cut the Mule lead to 13-8 when Sean Kooi scored on a 12-yard run at 1:00 of the second quarter; Kooi caught a Ben Byington pass for the conversion.

The Mules closed out the first half with a touchdown with one second left to play. Luke Brown passed to brother Zach Brown for an 11-yard score and also kicked the conversion for a 21-8 halftime lead.

James Anderson provided the third quarter fireworks with a 50-yard touchdown run at 8:50; the conversion failed, leaving the Mules ahead 27-8.

In the fourth quarter, Byington connected with Kooi for a nine-yard touchdown pass, leaving the Mules ahead 27-14.

Zach Brown closed the scoring on a nine-yard run with 1:29 left in the game. Luke Brown kicked the conversion for the final 34-14 score.

Fullback Hank Ferguson didn't score for the Mules but gained 131 yards on 20 carries. Anderson had 116 yards, and Zach Brown gained 105 yards.

Luke Brown completed two of four passes for 29 yards and two touchdowns; Zach Brown had one catch for 12 yards, and Bryce Good caught one for 17 yards.

Luke Brown led the defense with 17 tackles and assists; Ferguson had 16, Casey Wilson 14, Anderson 12, Evan Quigley 11, and Zach Brown 10.

The Mules head to Raymond this Friday for their last non-league game.
