Oktoberfest Vendors Fair this Saturday

NICE WEEKEND--We had a pretty great weekend weather-wise, as there was a lot going on and it's always great when big events wind up enjoying sunny days. One of those who really depends on nice weather, is the " End of the World Rod Run " down at the beach, and by the look of the traffic, they were packed down there. Lines and lines of hot cars, trucks towing car trailers or motor-homes and such, were just solid, both coming and going, so for those folks, it was the perfect weekend, as a car show isn't much fun in the rain!

From the sounds of it, we are supposed to have quite a bit more sunshine so let's enjoy it while we can.

GOOD SHOWING--The Washington State Fair was also going on and from the pictures I saw, they had a great attendance and everyone was enjoying the sunshine with just right temperatures, unlike the triple digits we experienced in August! One little gal who enjoyed the fair, was Marissa Apperson, granddaughter of Judy Smith (formerly of the Duck Inn) as she flew in all the way from Texas to show her cows and wound up winning the top prize in her class of Shorthorns, so that was pretty neat. Congrats to her!

FOS--The Friends of Skamokawa enjoyed the dry days, as it's certainly easier to set up a big event like their Wine Tasting/Auction fund raiser, when it's not pouring down rain. As always they had the Skamokawa Grange Hall decorated real nice and the food was great, which was catered by locals Jacob and Ginger, owners of Sharon's Pizza Mill in Cathlamet. There were a wonderful variety of wines being served up, and from the full tables, there were many who donated things for both the silent and live auctions. Unfortunately for me, I got out-bid on several items, but that just meant more money for the Friends of Skamokawa, so that's okay, as they are trying to get the Redmen Hall painted.

If you couldn't be there and would love to help them out, you can send in a donation to: Friends of Skamokawa, P.O. Box 67, Skamokawa, WA 98647.

Don't forget, the "Rolling on the River" exhibit has been extended, so if you'd like to check out the River Life Interpretive Center and the hall, now would be a good time.

MULES RULE!--The weekend weather suited our Wahkiakum Mules football team just fine too, as they went to Ocosta last Friday night and beat them soundly, 40 to nothing, so good job Mules! This Friday night is supposed to be quite nice once again, and they will be at home and hosting South Bend, so here's to another great game! Go Mules!

The Lady Mules will play volleyball away this coming Saturday at the tournament in Mossyrock, with just the Varsity team playing that day. Here's to a winning evening ladies!

67'ers--All members of the WA-KI-HI Class of '67are reminded that we'll meet for our Fall chat this Saturday afternoon (17th) at 1 p.m., at Izzy's in Kelso. Spread the word to others, and we hope to see you there!

SATURDAY--Here's hoping the nice weather continues as the Oktoberfest Vendors Fair takes place this Saturday at the Elochoman Slough Marina with special German Sausages and beer being served at the River Mile 38 Brewery, so there's a couple of things to keep the weekend busy! The vendors will open at 9 a.m., so here's to a nice warm day for folks to enjoy the various booths and a little food and beverage at the nearby brewery.

CONGRATULATIONS--We'd like to give a special shout out to former WA-KI-HI alumni, Angela Corbin Dickson, who just received her Masters Degree in Nursing from the University of Washington, so a big "congratulations" to her. Angela is married to her proud husband, Tim, and her folks are Phil and Nancy Corbin, formerly of Puget Island. Needless to say, they are extremely proud of her as well!

MOVING UP--Also doing great these days, is Mark Pedersen's daughter-in-law, Samantha Pedersen, as she has now gotten a well deserved promotion in her job with the FBI, so we send our "congratulations" back east to her. She will now be teaching agents her skills as an intelligence analyst, so a nice step up for her. Her proud husband is Adam, who is Mark's second son and is currently serving our country in the armed forces. Adam has recently taken on another new job, as he is now his daughter's soccer coach, so he's a pretty happy Daddy as well as husband!

COLUMBIA RIVER COUNTRY DAYS--Coming right up will be the big weekend at the end of this month, and first of October, when happenings will take place for the annual Columbia River Days, which starts at the Puget Island Farmers Market on Friday, has 4-H doings at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds here in Skamokawa and then that evening, there will be the annual dinner on the Covered Bridge in Grays River, so quite the event. Contact Carrie Backman at 795-3278 for all the details and tickets for the dinner; time's a tickin'. Get them while they last!

ALSO IN OCTOBER--On Oct. 15, there will be a Harvest Bazaar Sale at the United Methodist Church in Skamokawa, where there will be various vendors with arts and crafts and even some baked items. The Bazaar will last from 9 a.m., to 3 p.m. If you'd like to take part in this sale, they will be renting out tables for just $10, so if you're interested, call 795- 0628.

YUM-YUM--If you like razor clams, it looks like you're going to get a chance to dig in mid-October, so get those clam guns and shovels ready, and keep an eye on the schedule and tides for that, and of course, for any cancellations, as that often happens when numbers are low or other problems come about.

STILL LOOKING--Jason Rainey and his wife, Jami and helpers do a fantastic job at setting up the Haunted House in the fairgrounds every year, and we sure do appreciate all their hard work. It's always nice to have some new Halloween decorations to add to the mix, so if you happen to have some extra things laying around, why not donate them to Jason and help spruce up the grounds even more this year? Maybe you'd even like to help out? That would be awesome! The Haunted House will be free this year, so we hope you'll all come down this way and take in the fun. Donations are appreciated but we don't want the kids to miss out on a fun time, so just in case funds are a little tight for you, bring the kids down anyway! Call 795-0641 if you can help out!
