Down River Dispatches
This has been a tough summer on the haymakers in our neck of the woods, never knowing when or if the rain is coming. As I work on this article, we have rain in the forecast, so the farmers are scurrying to get their baled hay under cover before it gets here.

Westend news:
Are you ready for the annual Pig Roast/Potluck and Campout? Once again, Poul and Zenaida Toftemark are opening their home and property for their annual feast and festivities coming up this weekend, the 5th, 6th and 7th located at 4491 SR 4 West. Bring the whole family but please, leave your four footed friends at home. This is a weekend about friendship and sharing and I don’t know another couple that are closer to being the perfect example. Bring your favorite dish to share, lawn chairs and your favorite beverage to drink while you visit with friends and relatives. Watch the kids, listen to the music, swim, dance if you like, eat some of the best food imaginable and just enjoy.
The Grays River Grange Farmer’s Market is up and running every Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. I checked it out this week and picked up some delicious chard and a head of red cabbage, two of my favorite vegetables. Check it out. Local produce for reasonable prices.
Speaking of shopping local, while my niece was still here visiting from California, we stopped in at Mooer’s Alger Creek Station to do a little browsing. Maury and Sharrel were delightful to talk to and they showed us around a bit before letting us wander through all the interesting stuff they have in several rooms. Everything is nicely organized and easy to shop. I would say, if you are looking for a unique gift, beautiful art work, old toys, old tools and furniture, or just about anything, this is the place you will probably find it. We had a great time, and I found an old set of dominoes for a great price. If you haven’t been there yet, make sure you allow plenty of time to browse through everything, or you just might miss whatever it is you came for or can’t live without. The store is located at 957 SR 4 West and they are open most days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The Free Saturday night movie being shown this week in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park is a kid’s movie with free popcorn for the youngsters. The film is rated G and the show starts at 7:00 p.m. Concessions are also available.
