Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
Wahkiakum Mule golfer Sarah Shi struck the ball marvelously for the second day in a row and received the sixth place medal for golfing in the WIAA State Championships last week at Meadow Wood Golf Course in Liberty Lake.
On day one, she shot 41, 47, 88 and was tied for sixth place. Day two, she shot an identical 41, 47, 88 for 176 total, claiming sixth place all alone. Ilwaco's Aslyn Fisher shot 185 and finished in ninth place. Sarah finished three strokes out of fifth place and four strokes out of fourth, but six strokes ahead of seventh place NW Christian Chloe Sweatman's 182. The State Champion was Davenport's Kaysa Panke 77, 79 for 156.
Sarah, a junior foreign exchange student, set history as she was the first girl from Wahkiakum High School to qualify for the state tournament; she finished first at the Quad District Golf Tournament in Oak Harbor. She also is the first girl from Wahkiakum to win a Quad District tournament. She now also is the only girl to medal at state golf in school history. She is the second highest achiever at state golf in school history; Cole Claussen's fifth place finish in 2010 is the highest.
The year end golf banquet is scheduled for June 12, 5 p.m. at the middle school.
