Sarah Shi wins district title
Wahkiakum Mule golfer Sarah Shi won the Bi-District Tournament at Oak Harbor on Thursday to qualify for the state tourament next week in Spokane.
Sarah shot 52 on the front but overcame an eight stroke lead at the turn against Ilwaco's District 4 champion and nemesis Aslyn Fisher to shoot a 40 on the much harder back nine to win medalist honors with a 92 and a four stroke win.
Sarah had difficulty on two short par three because of the elevation and carded triple bogeys. She also had trouble with the wicked fast greens, but about number eight, she started hitting the putter better. An up and down for par on the 10th hole par three lifted her spirits, and she started striping the ball at every target she lined up on.
This is Sarah's first tournament win, and she is the first girl from Wahkiakum to win a Bi-District championship and qualify for state. Sarah competed in the state championships at Meadowpark Golf Course May 23rd and 24th.
On May 18, Mules sophomore golfer Bryce Good shot 92/102 for a total 194 and finished 10th of the final 16 boys at Newaukum Valley golf course.
Blake Kukula, an 8th grader and son of Surfside golf course owner John Kukula, shot 78/81 159 to capture Ist place over Matthew Lee of Life Christian 79/86 165. Ilwaco captured the team district trophy over Life Christian, and North Beach finished third.
