Last Friday, with next year's freshmen present, hopeful student leaders spoke to the Wahkiakum High School student body about why they wanted to represent them. The speeches ranged in length and ran the spectrum from serious to lighthearted. All were entertaining.
"Wahkiakum is such a special place," said Charlie Ashe, who was running for Public Relations Manager. "I want all to be involved and I want to be able to help encourage this."
She pointed out that some sporting events at the school had themes.
"I want to make sure that no one shows up in all black at a red-out game," she said.
Kayleigh Nakonsky, who was running for assistant treasurer, had a lot of ideas including uniforms for the high school band, new bleachers for the gym and the football stadium, and more jail time for Mr. Cox as a money making scheme.
Ellie Leitz, who was running for assistant treasurer as well, asked the students snap their fingers. She began to rap.
"...when it comes to math, I have a real knack, I've even been endorsed by Miss Haberlach, I have experience in ASB, In middle school I was president and VP, I can crunch numbers day in and day out, if you vote for me there's nothing to worry 'bout. Vote Ellie."
Peyton Souvenir, who was running for secretary, admitted that she did not want to follow Leitz' performance. She listed good handwriting as one of her qualifications.
Alex Mellis couldn't be present, but prepared a video in advance.
Cheyenne Barton was the only candidate for President.
"I'm open to any ideas," Barton said. "It's going to be my senior year and I want it to be the best year."
She then thanked her mother, Natalya Barton, who was in attendance, for all her support.
The 2016-2017 ASB student leaders were announced after the votes were counted.
They are President Cheyenne Barton, Vice-president Zach Brown, Secretary Peyton Souvenir, Treasurer Makenzie Anderson, Assistant Treasurer Ellie Leitz, and Public Relations Manager Charlie Ashe.
