Westend news:
This Saturday will be the 24th annual Letter Carriers “Stamp out Hunger” food drive. During this week, the Naselle and Rosburg/Grays River mail carriers will deliver a plastic collection bag to every curbside mailbox. Non perishable food items, such as peanut butter, juice, canned meats, fish, soup, vegetables, pasta, cereal, spaghetti sauce, etc, can be placed in the bags and hung on the mailbox for collection on May 14.
If you don’t receive a bag, any plastic bag left at the mailbox will work. The mail carrier will pick it up and do the rest. There will also be a collection box at both post offices throughout this week. Collected items will benefit our local food pantries. All donations will be greatly appreciated.
This looks like another busy weekend, starting with the 32nd annual Great White Tail Run sponsored by Wahkiakum 4-H which will be held on Saturday in the Julia Butler Hansen National Refuge located in Skamokawa. Start time is at 10 a.m. The event includes 10K, 5K and two-mile courses with recognition for overall male and female winner in each distance and ribbons for the top three finishers in each age division.
Entrants can register or pick up preregistration packets beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Skamokawa Vista Park on run day. If you wish to compete with your dog, please add $1 to your registration fee. Official dog rules: Socialized dogs only. Dogs should be at least 6 months old with current vaccinations. Dogs must be on leash at all times and stay on designated course. Female dogs in season are not permitted.
This is always a great fundraiser for the 4-H groups in Wahkiskum County and helps to fund projects and activities for this wonderful group. Our county is fortunate to have so many folks interested in our youth and are always available to make events like this one a success.
Entry forms with full information can be found locally or requested by emailing carol.ervest@gmail.com. For further information call 360-465-2275 or 360-795-3278.
On Sunday, the 14th Annual Spring Tea and Luncheon sponsored by the Grays River United Methodist Church’s Friendship Circle will take place in the Rosburg Hall starting at 11:30 a.m. A suggested donation of $8 per person, and under 12 years $5, can be paid at the door. For more information please call 465-2740 or 484-7749.
The theme for this event is “Magic in the Kitchen” so the entertainment on hand for your enjoyment is Steve Hamilton, comedian and magician. Also in keeping with the theme, the Appelo Archives Center will provide copies for sale of Donna Gatens-Klint’s book entitled “The Magic of the Backwoods Kitchen.”
This year’s menu includes scones, fresh fruit, sandwiches and savories, veggies and dip, tea and punch and the always extra special dessert plate.
Servers for this event will be local kids affiliated with 4-H. Bring a friend, dress up or come casual, wear a fancy hat or not, for a fun afternoon.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the West End Food Pantry this year.
The Free Friday Night movie this week in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park is a 2015 American epic space opera and is the seventh installment in an epic sci-fi series and is rated PG. Concessions are also available.
Beginning in June the movie night will be moved to Saturday night instead of Friday. The movies are still free, concessions will still be available and the show will still start at 7:00 p.m. The first movie of each month will be a kids movie.
The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets every week in the Rosburg Hall for a delicious meal prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew.
