PRETTY NICE--Last weekend was Mother's Day weekend and while Sunday wasn't as warm and toasty as Saturday, it was still pretty nice later on in the day as the winds blew the cloudiness away and we saw the sun again in the afternoon. I have to admit, the air was much nippier by late afternoon, but hey, it wasn't pouring down rain, so that was a blessing. Mid-week we are to see some pretty toasty temperatures but it looks like we may have to bring out the umbrellas for the weekend.
Sadly, our neighbors to the north in Alberta, Canada are dealing with one of the worst fire disasters in history which displaced almost 90,000 people and wiped out hundreds of thousands of acres of land, and hundreds of homes, so we certainly have no reason to complain in comparison to what they are going through. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have lost everything, including their entire town, so we truly feel for them.

FREE MOVIE--This Friday evening, May 13, there will be a free movie at the Cathlamet Community Center. It is a true story about an Irish woman's 50 year search for her son that was given up for adoption as a toddler and is rated PG. It begins at the usual time of 7 p.m., so if you're interested, head that way for a very inexpensive evening of entertainment.
THIS SATURDAY--It's time to get on those running shoes, as this Saturday, May 14, it's time to take part in the 4-H Great White Tail Run! Check in at Skamokawa Vista Park by 8:30 a.m., and enjoy your choice of several different lengths of run, and who knows, maybe you'll be a winner in your division!
SKAMOKAWA GRANGE--On the first and third Tuesday of the month, the Skamokawa Grange #425 holds their meetings at their hall at 18 Fairgrounds Road. Their meetings are held at 7 p.m., and all are welcome to join them. Also, the Cub Scouts meet there on Friday evenings at 6 p.m., and more members are certainly welcomed.
HURRY! THREE WEEKS AWAY--After this weekend is over, there are only three weeks to go until the annual Rods and Reels Car Show at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. I can hardly believe it's that time of year again and we trust we'll be able to raise as much money as last year, if not more, for our seniors for scholarships. If you haven't already pre-registered, you must do so in the next couple of days as the forms must be received by May 16. Forms may be found at the Skamokawa General Store and Moore's Auto in Cathlamet, so hurry and get yours today! If you have access to a computer, you can print them off of the Rods and Reels Rod Run Facebook page. Contact Lee Tischer for more info at 360-430-4377 or email him at tisch@cni.net.
OPEN NOW--I heard that the Grays River Cafe is back in business, but they have limited days and hours right now, with a limited menu. I'm sure that once they get all settled in, things will be expanding. We hope the new folks do well, as that area is truly in need of a place to meet with friends and neighbors and enjoy a good gab over lunch and a cup of coffee!
SYMPATHY--We heard of the passing of long time resident, John Didricksen last weekend after complications arose after suffering a heart attack recently. We certainly want to send his family and friends our deepest symapthies for their loss.
LOOKING FOR MUSICIANS--We have multiple musicians in our area, so if you're interested in showing off your talent, then why not contact the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce and get your name on the list to be part of their entertainment on Bald Eagle Day, which is Saturday July 16. However, you need to submit your entry by June 1 as they will be selecting their choices on June 14. You can either submit an mp3 file or video link and send it via email at wchamber@cni.net for consideration, and you also need to let them know what your fee is and what your fee is for either a 45 minute set or a full hour. If you're new here, the stage is usually set up in the Pharmacy parking lot so you're pretty much in the middle of Main Street and you'll be able to entertain a whole bunch of people that day, so get your talented self out there and be a part of Bald Eagle Days!
MD RECAP--There appeared to be many happy Moms in the area after Mother's Day, as Facebook was plastered with photos of families gathering together for the big day and putting a lot of smiles on their Moms' faces. Some were giving Mom flowers and other gifts as well, but most Moms were super pleased to just hear from their kids or talk to them via the phone, as many weren't close by enough to visit, but it's just nice to be acknowledged in any way possible. Of course, a few husbands made their wife's day by making sure Mom didn't have to cook, and I was one of those, so hey, that was icing on the cake after hearing from all five kids, so it was a good day indeed!
Mrs. Ralph Pedersen enjoyed her day with her two sons, Tim and Mark, and the other two Mrs. Pedersens in her life, Margie and Rhonda, so with food, gifts and lots of gab at their house, it was a great day.
Jeanne Paulsen had a great Mother's Day weekend which included hearing from all her kids, enjoying lunch with her daughters and grandkids and a wonderful time at church as well.
The Pete Sechlers had a brunch at their house in celebration of Mother's Day, with Moms Katie Sechler, Susan Schillios and their Mom, Sally Nollan there to enjoy the nice day and great meal.
Bobbie Leingang had a nice day as she got to talk with all her kids and son, Kevin took her and hubby Ron out to lunch, so that made a nice day even better.
OUT OF THE PAST--This week back in 1946, the week began cool and windy, then it got cold and rainy before turning out very nice. This year, May 12 was Mother's Day and Mary Anne Risk was a guest at the Everest home for supper. Elsie Everest had nice gifts from daughters, Carol and Marian and a letter from son, George and nice cards as well. That Friday evening, Mrs. Hansen, Foster and Risk took Elsie Everest over to the Sons of Norway lodge for a nice program and dance, where everyone had a good time. The Cathlamet Business and Professional Woman's Club went to Jensen's Chicken Inn that week where they all had a wonderful chicken dinner and also held an election of officers meeting. Donna Hatton was voted in as President; Mabel Turner as VP; Creta Lee as secretary; Alice Snyder as treasurer and Lorraine Springer as corresponding secretary. (Elsie Everest ended her two year stint as treasurer with that election.) Others attending that evening were Helen Anders, Beth Harrow, May Watkins, Maren Tholo, Josephine Erp, Leona Quarles, Mabel Turner, Vyra Bowman, Floy, Cuddy, Dona Murphey, Veva Stamper and Nevada Shamley. That Saturday evening, it was off to the movies to see "Bells of St. Mary's" which Grandma Elsie thought was real good.
In 1961 the week began nice, then got cloudy and sort of misty but the rest of the week was real nice and even hot by the end of it. Mother's Day was May 14 that year and a nice dinner was spent at daughter Carol's house on Puget Island. Later on, the Everests and Mayme Johnson went to the Community Choir Program which the Everests' daughter, Carol Pedersen, was a part of. Her children, David, Kay and Marshall were there as well. Grandpa Everest was busy helping take the rest of the things from the Psrish house to the new church. The following day, the first church worship service was held in the new church. (Congregational). Jean McNally did up Grandma Elsie's hair that week and then she headed up to daughter Marian's house, so she could sit under her nice new hair dryer and get it dry nice and quick like. The new belt for her Singer sewing machine showed up and soon Grandma Elsie was busy sewing again; it was a new muu-muu for her and a new pink, french gingham dress for granddaughter Kay. That week, star Gary Cooper passed away. All this according to my Grandma Elsie Everest's diaries.
