The Wahkiakum Mules baseball team took one step closer to the state tournament with an 8-2 district win against Life Christian on Tuesday in Adna.
James Anderson took the mound in the third inning and earned the win. He pitched nearly three innings, striking out five and allowing one hit. Zach Brown pitched the final two innings and got the save. He struck out four and walked one.
Colton Mace went 2-4 and drove in two runs. Anderson was 4-4 and had one RBI. Z. Brown, Terris Record, Hank Ferguson and Casey Wilson added one RBI apiece.
"We had a slow start but we put our foot on the gas pedal from the fourth inning on," Coach Marc Niemeyer said.
Last Saturday, the Wahkiakum Mules baseball team began district play with a win against Ilwaco. Later that afternoon, the Mules found themselves in the loser's bracket after losing to the first place Central League Pe Ell/Willapa Valley team.
The Mules won the opening game against Ilwaco 13-0 and sent the Fishermen home for the season. Record pitched all five innings, striking out 10 and walking four. He allowed two hits and no runs. On offense, Record went 3-3 at bat and hit a double, driving in two runs. Mace hit a triple and drove in two more. Luke Brown and Anderson had two RBIs apiece. Ferguson and Wilson each had an RBI.
The Mules handed Pe Ell/Willapa Valley their only loss earlier this season but were unable to duplicate that win in their second game on Saturday. The Mules lost 4-6.
Anderson pitched the first three innings and took the loss. He struck out three batters and walked two. He allowed six hits and five earned runs. Z. Brown stepped in and pitched the final three innings. He struck out one and walked one, allowing one hit and one earned run.
Record continued his big day with a home run and three RBIs. Z. Brown went 2-2 at bat and hit a double.
"We gave them too many chances early," Coach Marc Niemeyer said. "It was enough. We battled and showed a lot of heart and were right there at the end.
The Mules travel to Adna on Friday to play Napavine at 4 p.m. Regardless of the outcome, the Mules will travel to Mossyrock on Saturday for one more game. If they win on Friday, they are guaranteed a trip to state. If they lose, they must win on Saturday to continue to state.
