The Wahkiakum Mule golf team lost a heartbreaker 208-207 to Adna on Monday but beat Napavine at Neuwakum Valley Golf Course moving their intra-conference record to 19-8.
Mules Bryce Good shot 46 and Sarah Shi 47 as they finished second and third in the 13 player event and both had great ball striking days. Bryce four-putted the last green, and Sarah chipped over three greens from short range to log three double bogeys, letting Adna's Logan Boone capture medalist honors with a 44. Tyler St. Onge shot 55, Zach Johnston 60, Connor Thompson 62 and Gage Horman 63. The Mules' next match is today (Thursday) at North Beach.
On April 20, the Mules traveled to Ocean Park and lost to Ilwaco High School 225-201 at Surfside Golf Course.
Sophomore Bryce Good tied for second in the 11 player event with a 48, losing to Ilwaco's Blake Kukula 37. Freshman Zach Johnston finished 4th with a 49, Tyler St Onge 6th with a 58. Gage Horman shot 70 while Connor Thompson and Elijah Doiron were both disqualified when they misunderstood the "provisional ball" rule.
First year players have a hard time comprehending so many rules in golf, and unfortunately no coaches were on their tee box when they committed the violations.
On a more happy note Sarah Shi beat Ilwaco's Aslyn Fisher by five strokes, shooting 48 and claiming medalist honors in the girls event.
The Mule boys intra-conference record dropped to 18-7 with this loss, but they are still improving. They bested their four-person aggregate scoring against Ilwaco on the last trip to Surfside by four strokes, and that was when Sarah was still playing for the boys. Now that we have enough boys on the eligibility list the boys will have to step it up on their own.
