The Wahkiakum Mules baseball team won two games and lost two more this week after facing a tough Pe Ell team. Pe Ell is currently in second place in league and the Mules are third with a 9-3 record. The Mules are 11-3 overall.
At home on April 13, the Mules beat Napavine in both games of a double header.
James Anderson pitched all seven innings of the first game, which the Mules won 7-2. He struck out five and allowed two earned runs.
Zach Brown went 1-2 at bat, hitting a double and driving in two runs. Terris Record went 3-4 and batted in three runs. Joey Moore went 1-3 and got an RBI. Luke Brown was 2-3 and drove in a run.
The Mules won the second game 6-3. Zach Brown, the starting pitcher, got the win. He pitched five innings, struck out seven and allowed five hits and one earned run. He was relieved by Record who pitched two innings and got the save. Record struck out four and allowed one hit and two earned runs.
Offense was driven by Z. Brown and Record who hit three run homers in the first and third innings, respectively. Anderson went 2-3 and hit a double.
“This was a great sweep for us,” Coach Marc Niemeyer said. “We have to keep getting better and execute more consistently in offensive situations. The pitchers threw well and our sticks packed a punch.”
On Monday, the team traveled to Pe Ell and lost two, 0-2 and 3-4.
In the first game, L. Brown went 3-3 and hit a double. Z. Brown was 2-3 and hit a double.
Anderson took the loss. He pitched 5 1/3 innings and struck out six. He allowed one hit and one run. Record finished the final 1 2/3 innings. He struck out three and allowed two hits and one earned run.
In the second game, Z. Brown went 1-3 and hit a double, Record went 1-4 and drove in a run. Ferguson was 1-3 with a double and Anderson was 2-4 with a double.
Z. Brown took the loss after pitching six innings. He struck out five and allowed seven hits and four runs, two of which were earned. Record finished the game. He pitched one inning and allowed one hit.
“We battled and came up a little short,” Niemeyer said. “We had opportunities to win both games. We have another big one with Toledo. We’ve got to turn the page and look forward.”
The Mules host Toledo, the number one team in the Central 2B League, in a double header on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. The Indians are undefeated in league play.
