Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
Commissioners of Port District 2 acted on varied business when they met Tuesday at their Skamokawa Vista Park office.
Commissioners adopted a resolution setting the stage for purchase of a waterfront lot in Skamokawa. The lot, on Pleasant Point Road, has a dock.
The dock will be an aid to boaters, said Commissioner Brian O'Connor. Because of siltation, the nearby launching ramp isn't usable at low water, and boaters have sometimes had to wait hours to launch or exit the water.
Port Attorney Tim Hanigan said the resolution allows the port to borrow a maximum of $225,000 from Wahkiakum County; the amount would cover purchase price for the property and some extras for improvements. The port is conducting a feasibility study of the sale, he said, and won't proceed if the project appears unfeasible.
The board met in executive session at the end of their meeting to discuss real estate purchase but made no decisions upon returning to open session.
The port has notified Pleasant Point residents that they must remove belonging they've left on port property on the west side of the road by the end of the month.
One resident, Cinnon Tarabochia, said she would remove items belonging to her, but she wondered if the port district would pay for rock she'd placed there for parking
"If you're not going to buy it, I'll remove it," she said. "I'm not going to give it to you."
Hanigan suggested the commission take the matter under advisement and notify Tarabochia of the decision.
"When," she asked.
"Uh, within a week," Hanigan responded.
