Donald R. Greenlund

Donald R. Greenlund passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2016 after visiting with family and friends at Community Hospice in Longview, WA. He was just a few weeks from celebrating his 84th birthday.

Don was born on April 16, 1932 in McMinnville, OR to Clarence M. and H. Linnea (Young) Greenlund, the 4th of five children. He attended Columbus grade school and graduated in 1950 from McMinnville High School where he participated in band, playing the clarinet.

After high school Mr. Greenlund entered the U.S. Coast Guard where he served for three years. He then attended Portland State University where he studied Mechanical Engineering. In 1968 Don earned a teaching certificate from the University of California, Berkley.

He worked as a diesel mechanic all over the world. He served as both a deacon and an elder at Lake Burien (WA) Presbyterian Church where he also enjoyed singing in the choir. In the summer of 1991 Don and his wife Dolly traveled to the King’s School in England near the Canterbury Cathedral. While there, Mr. Greenlund performed the choral presentation of Verdi’s Requiem. Don was also active in the greater Seattle and Tacoma chapter of the Studebaker club.

He is preceded in death by both of his parents, and brothers Jack Greenlund and H. Charles (Chuck) Greenlund.

He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Dolly (Walker) Greenlund, sister Dorothy (Kreder) Pekkola, sister Susan Phinney, daughter Kandys L. Greenlund, son Frank W. Greenlund, son Douglas D. (Marla) Greenlund, son Dwight L. (Gigi) Greenlund, grandsons Jean Pierre Greenlund, Jeffrey L. (Kaitlin) Greenlund, Dean R. Greenlund and Joseph A. Greenlund, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and good friends.

Funeral Services will be held at Macy & Son Funeral home in McMinnville, OR at 1 p.m. on Thursday April 7, 2016 with viewing on Wednesday, April 6, 2016. A memorial service will be held at the Skamokawa United Methodist Church in Skamokawa, WA on Saturday April 9, 2016 at 1 p.m. with reception following.
