Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

Dr. Arthur Lyddon Hauge

Arthur L. Hauge MD, passed peacefully away March 27, 2016 on Easter Sunday. Art was born December 9, 1925 and raised in Coeur d' Alene, ID, the son of Adolf and Isabelle. He earned his Eagle Scout Badge at the age of 13. He graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School, joined the US Navy and was in active service from 1943 to 1957, including service during the Korean War. With the support of the Navy, Art graduated from the University of California Berkeley with a bachelor's degree and continued studying toward an MBA.

In 1952, while on leave in New York, he contacted the younger sister of one of his high school best friends. After a short courtship, he married Marie Phillips in Washington DC, on March 10, 1952. They had eight children together and were happily married for 56 years until Marie's passing in 2008.

Art's military career took a sharp turn, when he requested an assignment close to home in Idaho to help care for his ailing father. That experience, plus another when Marie fell severely ill, caused him to decide to become a doctor. He entered medical school at the age of 32 and finished at the top of his class at University of Oregon Medical School.

After completing his internship in San Diego, Art entered private practice in St. Ignatius, Montana where his focus evolved from family practice to a specialization in Orthopedic Surgery. After leaving Montana, he enlisted in the US Army Reserve and practiced at the Veteran's Hospital in Portland. His medical career also included a stint as a partner in the Orthopedic and Fracture Clinic in Portland.

An avid sailor since childhood, Art was a member of the Portland Yacht Club from 1972 until his death. He enjoyed racing his sloop, the Rowdy Lady II, along the Columbia and completed the Victoria to Maui race in 1980 and crossing the Atlantic in 1992. He loved cruising in the San Juans and around the world well into his 80s.

For his last 18 years, he enjoyed living on Puget Island where he could fish for salmon from his back yard and watch the ships sail past his living room window.

He is survived by his sister, Dorothy McDonald (John); seven children: Betsy (Joe), Shirley (Greg), David (Suzy), Joe (Charlene), Tom (Yong), Peter (Caroline) and Kristina (Dan); and eleven grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marie (2008) and his son Joseph Russell (1962).

Funeral Services will be held Friday, April 1 at 3 p.m., at St. James Episcopal Church in Cathlamet, WA; and a service will also be scheduled St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Coeur d' Alene, ID at a later date. A celebration of life will be held at the Portland Yacht Club, Saturday, April 2 at 3 p.m. He will be laid to rest at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d' Alene.

Memorial contributions can be made to Shriner's Children's Hospital.
