The Naselle-Grays River Valley School District Board of Directors met for its monthly meeting on March 15.
Several personnel moves were approved. These included the retirements of Principals Karen Wirkkala at the K-12 school and Alan Bennett at the Youth Camp School. Shirley Miller, Gear-Up Coordinator, will be resigning at the end of the year as well. The board approved the hire of Rob Dalton as middle school track coach.
The board approved an inter-local agreement with Sunnyside School District for future purchases of Apple computers. The agreement ensures the lowest contract prices for Apple computers.
Principal Karen Wirkkala recognized the Knowledge Bowl Team for their excellent season and wished them well at the state meet on March 19 in Arlington. Wirkkala also provided an overview of the Career Fair that Naselle High School will be putting on for its students on March 23. Over 35 people representing a variety of businesses and occupations/careers will be present.
Recaps of the boys regional basketball game and junior high knowledge bowl season were provided – with both programs doing very well. A plaque was presented to girls basketball coach, Rose Nisbet, who was recognized as the Coastal 1B League Coach of the Year. Finally, an overview was provided of the Naselle Elementary Chinese New Year Celebration at Rosburg Hall. About 200 attendees were present for food, fun and lion dancing.
Superintendent Nelson commented that she had received about 10 inquiries so far regarding the principal openings. The positions close on April 13, and she and her staff team will be attending two career fairs – one in Vancouver and one in Tacoma, in addition to posting the positions on regional websites for administrator openings.
The next regularly scheduled meeting is April 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Grays River Fire Hall.
