WHS art students in competition, showing works

Art students at Wahkiakum High School have been creating what instructor Sue Garn calls "great artworks" for three terms in this 2015-2016 school year.

Garn said five exceptional pieces from WHS seniors Bryanna Peek and Connor Emlen-Peterson, sophmore Kara Haney and freshmen Trinity Klecker and Ellie Leitz are representing WHS in the Southwest Washington 2016 Regional High School Art Show Competition, sponsored by ESD 112. Judging will take place March 1 and 2. Selected works will be displayed in the ESD 112 building in Vancouver during March.

Sixteen of those pieces will receive regional awards to compete against entries from around Washington State in the Annual State Superintendent of Public Instruction's Art Show in Olympia during April and May.

The students and Garn want to invite the public to view student works at the Tsuga Gallery at 70 Main Street, Cathlamet.

Works by student artists Emlen-Peterson, Leitz, Haney, Klecker, Peek, Courtney Blacklock, Zack Johnston, Sean Yu, Josiah Romines and Mia Li are displayed in the Tsuga Gallery which is open Thursday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At mid-March, the seasonal opening show for Redmen Hall, Skamokawa will host a Wahkiakum School District exhibit with displays from all disciplines and grade levels. Every student in the WHS Art Program will have work on display at Redmen Hall.

Additionally, Peek designed the WHS girls basketball team's logo which is proudly being worn by the girls and their fans. Emlen-Peterson has designed a lively Mule to add to the images representing the Mighty Mules – items soon to be available in local businesses. And a recent invitation to create the logo for the Chamber of Commerce "Crabby in Cathlamet Crab and Oyster Feed 2017" will keep the art students creating fine and commercial art. People with need for a design may call Sue Garn at 360-747-1772 and allow the students to be part of the creative considerations.
