The Wahkiakum Mules girls’ basketball team returned to play after a long holiday break to face Ilwaco and lost 68-50. The Lady Mules are 5-1 in league play and 6-2 overall.
“We got off to a slow start,” Coach Rob Garrett said. “Their height was a problem, and we struggled with rebounding. We had a good second quarter, adding pressure to force turnovers and pulling ahead by one. We had the momentum at halftime, but they came back in the third quarter and slowed the game. In the second half we struggled to get to the basket or to get a good shot. We panicked and started forcing things.
“It was a good experience and a good game to learn from.”
Peyton Souvenir led scoring with 26 points. She also had 15 rebounds and seven steals. Macie Elliott added nine points and four steals. Sydney Hansen had six points, Grace Peacock had four and pulled down eight rebounds. Rory Heywood and Savannah Burdick added two points each, and Maddy Mace scored one point.
