The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team took on a full grown Adna Pirate team on Friday and came away with a 44-38 win.
Shooting was a bit cold and the team showed their youth with passing and turnovers, but as Coach Robbie Garrett might say, defense made all the difference.
"It was a huge game for us," Garrett said. "If I got to pick my schedule, I wouldn't have put Adna first. But it worked out well for us.
"We really worked on taking a charge in practice and we ended up taking four charges tonight," Garrett continued. "I think that was the turning point in the game. We got Adna in foul trouble and executed the game plan defensively really well. To start that well defensively is a huge plus in my book. I feel like defense is what wins the game."
Junior Peyton Souvenir, who is already a known force for the Mule team, got a taste of a double team from the Adna defense, something she is likely to face all year. Still, she managed to score 21 points, three from behind the arc. She also had seven rebounds, six assists, four steals and two blocks.
Maddy Mace scored six points and had four rebounds and one steal. Savannah Burdick added five points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Sydney Hansen, Tyra Elliott, and Macie Elliott had four points apiece. Hansen pulled down four rebounds. T. Elliott had one rebound and one assist, and M. Elliott had nine rebounds and one assist. Grace Peacock hit the boards hard and came up with 12 rebounds.
The Lady Mules shot 70 percent from the free throw line and 36 percent from the field.
"This is a great group of girls," Garrett said. "They have awesome attitudes, they work super hard, and by the end of the season, we're going to be really good."
