It was a much quieter affair than it was 30 years ago when the rivalry between the Mules and Comets ran strong. The upper bleachers weren't even pulled out on Tuesday when the 1B Naselle Comets came to town to open the boys basketball season with the Wahkiakum Mules.
The Mules won the game 54-40, taking a 15-6 first quarter lead and never looking back.
The Mules had four players in double digits. Zach Brown led the team in scoring with 16 points. He also had nine rebounds, five assists, two steals and three blocks. Ryan Quigley had 13 points, three rebounds and three blocks. Joey Moore and Hank Ferguson chipped in 10 apiece. Moore had five rebounds and three assists and Ferguson had 12 rebounds, one assist and one steal. Cody Terpsma had three points, one rebound and one assist. Casey Wilson added two points and three rebounds.
"I thought the kids played really well on both ends of the court," Coach Todd Souvenir said. "They came out with good energy and intensity and played well defensively."
Souvenir praised James Anderson, who got his first start as a freshman.
"I thought he did a really good job defensively and helped us out in that spot," Souvenir said.
The biggest thing the team needs to work on, according to their coach, is rebounding.
Travis Pine led the Comets in scoring with 17 points. Hayden Gudmundsen added seven more. Donny Edwards and Jacob Scrabeck had four points each. Ramzi Estes and DJ Wirkkala added two points apiece. and Erik Lund had one point.
