The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team began their season at the R.A. Long Jamboree on Monday. They played two 10 minute games, beating R.A. Long in the first and losing to Mark Morris in the second.
In game one, the Lady Mules beat the Jills, 24-14.
Savannah Burdick led the team in scoring with nine points. She also had four rebounds. Peyton Souvenir and Maddy Mace added six points. Souvenir pulled down seven rebounds and had four steals. Charlie Ashe had two points and Tyra Elliott had one.
“It was a good starting point for us,” Coach Ryan Garrett said. “I thought the girls did a good job of pushing the pace, which gave us lots of open looks.”
In game two, they faced Mark Morris and lost 18-15.
Souvenir led scoring this time with 11. Mace had three points and Grace Peacock added one. Macie Elliott had three rebounds and Burdick and Peacock had two rebounds apiece.
“We started out cold in this game and dug ourselves a bit of a hole,” Garrett said. “The girls did a good job fighting back and gave us a chance to put the game into overtime late. It was a good game experience for us early. We are young and have a lot to learn. It’s hard to simulate end of game situations in practice. Overall, I was really happy with the girls’ attitude and effort. It’s going to be a fun season coaching this group.”
