Shops were open in downtown Cathlamet on Saturday, and it was hard to find a parking spot as dusk settled in. A crowd had gathered in front of the courthouse for the annual holiday lighting and children were waiting for Santa Claus.
Down the street, Tina Merz's seventh grade class was raising money to provide Christmas for local families. A bake sale and a hay ride raised over $300.
The Christmas lights came on a little before 5 p.m., and Santa rode in on a fire engine. With a "Ho ho ho,", he was off to the Community Center to meet local children, who waited patiently for their turn to sit on his lap and tell him what they wanted for Christmas.
