Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
A group of friends, old and new, gathered at Vista Park in Skamokawa to clean up the beach for a couple hours on Sunday afternoon.
Children joined in the clean up, but stopped to play when the mood hit them. A dog ran happily from one group to another.
Annie Sutherland, who organized the event, thought it would be a good opportunity to spend some time outdoors, to take care of our community and the nature that surrounds us.
Volunteers picked up lots of glass and styrofoam. A tire was packed out. According to Sutherland, they found not only lots of broken glass and styrofoam, but plastic in all shapes, sizes and colors. They found jugs, bottles, shell casings, beer cans, wire and rope.
One participant even found a used hypodermic needle.
The mood was buoyant as the group began to finish up their self appointed task and remained buoyant even as they debated the source of all the trash. Was it brought in by the tide or by festive people who gave little thought to breaking glass on a beach where children came to play?
