The Wahkiakum Youth Football Mini-Mules avenged their only regular season loss in the first round of their playoffs last Saturday, beating a Longview team 20-6 to secure a spot in their playoff’s championship game.
Playing in a driving rain, the Mini-Mules and Longview played to a scoreless first quarter. The second quarter scoring started after halfback Tanner Collupy rumbled for a hard run, setting up first and goal from the Longview seven-yard line. Quarterback Gabe Moon appeared to score on the first down run, but was called short. On the next play Moon muscled his way in from one-yard out to give Wahkiakum a 6-0 lead.
As halftime approached, the Mini-Mules stopped Longview on downs at the Wahkiakum 35 yard line. After a nine yard run by Moon, wide receiver Beau Rose took a reverse handoff for 21 yards to the Longview 35-yard line. Quarterback Dominic Curl then connected with Rose for a 35-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 12-0. Kicker Logan Nelson then added a 2-point extra point kick to end the first half scoring at 14-0.
The scoreless third quarter was marked by an interception by Moon, which stopped a Longview drive.
Longview scored its only touchdown on a trick play on fourth down to cut the lead to 14-6.
The Mini-Mule Train (offensive line) then took over. Quarterbacks Moon and Curl alternated runs up the middle, eating up huge chunks of yardage and clock. Curl ran the Mini-Mules’ final touchdown from 7-yards out, breaking a tackle in the backfield, and completing the scoring for Wahkiakum at 20-6.
The game was sealed as Wahkiakum recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock with their second-team offense.
The Wahkiakum Mini-Mules, the regular season champions, face a team from Castle Rock at Castle Rock High School on Saturday, November 7 at 7 p.m., for the league playoff championship.
