Lyle Patterson camp starts next week

The second annual Lyle Patterson Memorial Basketball Camp begins next week at the Naselle/Grays River School District, from November 5-7.

The event was the brainchild of teacher/Athletic Director/Dean of Students/Basketball Coach Brian Macy, a Naselle grad and athlete who played for and wanted to honor the stalwart and unforgettable coach for whom the camp is named.

“Lyle Patterson is an icon really,” Superintendent Lisa Nelson said. “Someone says Naselle basketball, well, he’s synonymous with the black slacks and the white socks.

“He was a great basketball coach, but he coached the person first. He cared about you being the best person you could be. It had such a big impact on my life as far as what I do".

Macy contacted Fred Crowell, a man who embodies many of Patterson’s values, and asked him if he would like to be involved. Crowell runs what has become a premier sports camp program known throughout the world, NBC Camps.

“Coach always took us to Northwest Basketball Camp,” Macy said.

Crowell, who had known and worked with Patterson, was enthused about the idea, according to Macy. Based on reports from last year, he brought his legendary enthusiasm to Naselle.

He’ll be back next week to honor Patterson and employ his own talents to inspire Naselle students and athletes, to teach them about leadership and life skills. He’ll also spend time with students on the court.

“He tells the kids stories about Coach,” Macy said. “Stories I haven’t even heard.”

Last year the camp was held the first week of winter sports, but due to a scheduling conflict, Crowell wasn’t able to come at the same time. Athletes involved in fall sports will be unable to attend the class, but like their fellow classmates, will get to interact with Crowell in the classroom.

This year, students from third to eighth grade will be taking part in the camp. Practice in the gym is optional and will cost students $45.

The event was organized by the booster club and with help from Bob Torppa, Kim Eaton and Merle Sorenson.

Patterson coached the Naselle Comets basketball team from 1965-1997. He had an overall record of 623-228. His teams qualified for district every year, won 13 league titles, 15 district crowns and placed at state 18 times. Five times, the Comets were in the championship game.

He passed away in 2013.
