The Wahkiakum Mini-Mules recorded their second straight regular season championship, capping the year with a 20-8 win over a Longview youth football team. The win gave the Mini-Mules a 5-1 record in league play and awarded them the #1 seed in their upcoming playoffs.
Wahkiakum started off strong, taking their first possession 62 yards down field, marked by long runs by halfbacks Beau Rose and Tanner Collupy and fullback Gabe Moon. The drive was finished by a one yard quarterback keeper by Dominic Curl to give the Mini-Mules the early 6-0 lead.
The second quarter continued with dominant runs by Collupy, Rose and wingback Landon Luce. Rose completed the drive with a 10 yard run for a touchdown. Logan Nelson added a two-point conversion kick to distance the lead at 14-0. Wahkiakum then kept the ball from Longview by recovering an onside kick, which was scooped up by Niko Hawke.
The second half of the game was controlled by the Mini-Mule offensive line, as the team pounded its way down the field. Rose ran a reverse play in from 23 yards out on a fourth down play as the Mules stretched the lead to 20-0.
During the final period, the Mini-Mules surrendered their first touchdown in more than 19 quarters of play with just minutes to go in the game, with several of the starters on the bench.
Wahkiakum's offense over the regular season scored 112 points. That was overshadowed by the stout defense, which surrendered only 30 points over the entire season.
Wahkiakum heads into the two-week playoff system this week, facing another Longview team at 2 p.m. this Saturday, October 31 at Kelso Stadium.
