Mini-Mule team on winning streak

The Wahkiakum Mini-Mule Train ran over the Kelso Gold youth football team last Saturday at Wahkiakum High School, beating the visiting squad 38-0 in front of a large home crowd.

Scoring started quick in the first quarter, as Gabe Moon took a handoff and threw a halfback pass to streaking slot receiver Beau Rose for a 25 yard touchdown. Kicker Logan Nelson topped the drive with a two-point conversion kick to give the Mini-Mules the 8-0 lead.

Just a couple of plays later, defensive end Hank Bassi stripped and recovered a fumble at the Kelso 38 yard line. After a long setup run by Rose, Moon ran in a 3 yard touchdown, carrying as many as six Kelso defenders at the goal line, and extending the lead to 14-0.

In the 2nd quarter, Rose added a four yard run for a touchdown, giving the Mini-Mules a 20-0 lead. After a stiff defensive stand, the Mini-Mules got the ball back with just four seconds on the halftime clock. Another 25 yard sweep by Rose notched his third touchdown of the half and gave the home team an impressive 26-0 halftime lead.

The third quarter continued strong for Wahkiakum, as two long runs from Rose and halfback Tanner Collupy set up a three yard touchdown run for running back Landon Luce, handing the Mini-Mules a commanding 32-0 lead.

The Mini-Mules second-team offense and defense then took over the game, eventually scoring an additional touchdown in the fourth quarter on a QB sneak by quarterback Titan Niemela, to cap the scoring at 38-0.

The Mini-Mules offensive bout was nearly overshadowed by their stalwart defense, which did not surrender a first down to Kelso until just 2:09 left in the final quarter, with most of the sixth-grade starters on the bench.

The win brings the Mini-Mules record to 3-1 and extends a streak of three straight shutout victories for the defense. Head Coach Brad Moon stated that he had never seen such a big crowd at a home (Cathlamet) youth football game and expressed his appreciation for the support of the community.

Wahkiakum youth football plays this Saturday at Kelso High School against Kelso Blue at 7 p.m.
