Timberwolves roll over Mules in 40-6 game

Inexperience made the difference as the Morton/White Pass Timberwolves beat the Wahkiakum Mules 40-6 in a Central League football game last Friday.

The young Mules held their own, but when they missed a tackle or got out of position, the Timberwolves feasted on the mistakes.

After a scoreless first quarter, the visitors got on the scoreboard first with a 47-yard touchdown play. The conversion run made the score 8-0 with 3:48 left in the first half.

With 1:11 left in the half, the Timberwolves intercepted a Mule pass. A short drive ended in another touchdown and successful conversion with 36 seconds left, and the Mules were down 16-0 at half time.

M/WP opened the third quarter with a touchdown drive to lead 24-0. On the following kickoff, Mule senior Joey Moore caught the ball, headed up the right sideline, cut across field, slipped a couple tackles, and ran down the left sideline for an 85-yard touchdown. MWP stopped the conversion run, leaving the score 24-6 at 6:52 of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Timberwolves scored on runs of 59 and 84 yards to boost the final score to 40-6.

Mule quarterback Hank Ferguson completed a 27-yard pass to Zach Brown late in the game to put the Mules in scoring position, but the Timberwolf defense kept the Mules out of the endzone.

"I was proud of the kids' effort; we moved the ball well at times," said Mule Coach Eric Hansen. "But mistakes killed us."

The Mules gained 160 yards on the ground and 27 in the air for 187 yards of offense. Moore gained 64 yards on 16 carries; Brown gained 61 yards on 11, and Ferguson had 33 yards on one run. The Timberwolves had 252 yards rushing and 49 in the air for 301 yards.

On defense, Ferguson had six tackles and five assists; Brown 5/4, Moore 3/3, Nathan Dault 2/1, James Anderson 1/8, Casey Wilson 1/4, Dylan Ahmed 1/2, Evan Quigley 1/0, Alexander Merrill 0/3 and Nick Hummer 0/2.

The Mules take on the 2-3 Onalaska Loggers this Friday in the annual homecoming game. Action starts at 7 p.m.
