Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
The 8th Annual Covered Bridge Dinner was held on Saturday. The warm fall afternoon cooled as the evening came on and the light faded from the sky, making it hard to make out the children playing in a nearby field.
Jeffrey Reynolds serenaded tables with his violin. Joel Fitts recited some cowboy poetry. Table by table, participants made their way to the tables where food was being served.
Later, the adults remained in the covered bridge, which had been strung with lights, watching or bidding for raffle items as young volunteers who had earlier filled glasses and cups with water and coffee now paraded past tables with the items up for bid.
"Do I hear $20?" Joel Fitts asked. "How about $30?"
Two friends laughed as they bid and outbid and bid again for a painting of a waterfall. Later, they were both winners as the painting sat on the table between them.
The crowd slowly, quietly dwindled.
The Covered Bridge Dinner is the best kind of fundraiser," Cathlamet resident Lia Sealund said. "It's built by volunteers, the food and donations come from local families, farmers, fishermen and it brings the community together for such a good cause, 4-H. A worthy cause indeed."
