Mules pick up wins in volleyball action

The Wahkiakum Mule Volleyball team is off to a good start to the season with two wins last week, beating South Bend on the road and Ilwaco at home.

Last Thursday the team traveled to South Bend and beat the Indians in three games, 25-10, 25-14, and 25-18.

Kennedi LaBerge had five kills and eight digs. Makenzie Anderson had six kills and six digs and Grace Peacock had six aces, three kills and a stuff block.

"As it was our first showing," Coach Kayli Hurley said, "I'm happy with our overall performance. There's obviously room for improvement but the girls came out with great energy, fire, and scrap. This was a great team effort with all members fulfilling their role in a big way."

The first home match of the season was on Tuesday and the Mules beat the Fishermen in three sets, 25-14, 25-10, and 25-15.

Anderson had 12 kills, nine aces and a 2.46 out of a possible 3.0 passing average. Peacock had four kills and three aces. Setter Peyton Souvenir had 22 assists, five kills and three aces. Savannah Burdick had a 2.33 passing average.

"We started out a little slow but worked our way into it and ended all three sets decisively," Hurley said. "Our serving tonight was really aggressive and we are working toward controlling the ball on our side at all costs. We made strides toward that tonight."

The team will play in a tournament in Mossyrock on Saturday and on Tuesday will travel to Morton/White Pass for a match against the Timberwolves.
