Mule cheer team builds on skills

Two more students tried out for the Wahkiakum Cheer team last week, bringing their number up to 11 this year.

Coach Katie Brenner is thrilled.

"We have almost as many as the football team," she exclaimed as the team went through a cheer at Friday night's home game against Napavine. "If it keeps growing I might have to have a cutoff point. In basketball we'll have JV and varsity teams but they all cheer for football games."

The team was selected at the end of the last school year, and the girls have been working hard, even attending camp this summer. At half time, they performed a routine that they learned at camp that included a dance and a stunt.

"They actually hit an extension tonight that they were unable to complete at camp, so they have progressed," Brenner said. "They're doing great. We have a variety of different skill levels and we are coming together very well. I'm proud of them."

Makenzie Anderson, not pictured, is the Mule mascot. Also not pictured are Kaylynne Reed, Haylee Kerstetter and Courtney Blacklock.
