Food drive set for Saturday

The Food For Friends food drive will take place in Wahkiakum county on Saturday, September 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are needed to collect the food. The routes, bags for collection and door hangers for volunteers can be picked up in Cathlamet at the 25 River Street meeting room anytime between 9-11 a.m.. On the west end of the county food can be dropped off at the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park in Rosburg and at Okies Select Market in Naselle between 9 a.m. and noon.

There are five food relief organizations in Wahkiakum county: The Wahkiakum Food Bank, Helping Hand Food Bank, St. Catherine/St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank, the GAP program (serving elementary students in the Wahkiakum School District) and the West End Food Pantry.

Food collected during the food drive will be evenly distributed among the five food banks. The Wahkiakum Food Bank has generously made the decision to pass their portion on to the West End Food Pantry. The St. Catherine/St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank will show their support for the GAP program by donating their portion to GAP.

Monetary donations may be made at Bank of the Pacific. Payments should be made payable to Wahkiakum Food Banks and will be accepted until September 30. On October 1 the monies collected will be divided evenly among the Wahkiakum county food relief organizations.

The Food For Friends food drive is a service activity in response to the National Day of Service initiative following September 11, 2001. It is sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

For further information contact Sue Garn in Cathlamet at 360-747-1772 or Suzie Whalen representing the west end at 360-465-2312.
