Puget Island set for garage, yard sale

The Puget Island Garage and Yard Sale or PIGYS, which begins on Friday, is in its 14th year. Sandie York has participated in the event six times, but this is the first year she has been involved in its organization, shooting all the way to the top when founders Dean and Mariallis Wesner decided to retire.

York started planning in May but began to work in earnest on June 1. With flyers created by Wesner in hand, she has been posting them everywhere she can. York even had the good fortune to meet a DJ from a country radio station who agreed to announce PIGYS on his radio station. He surprised her by taking it even further and creating an ad. She has already learned a lot about putting this big event together, but so far, mostly about advertising.

“We’ll do more next year,” York said.

So far 42 Puget Island residents will be having sales. Some locations will have multiple vendors.

“Some people will have antiques. Someone is planning to have baked goods,” York said. “I’m looking forward to a good turnout.”

Due to the expected heat, some participants plan to have bottled water on hand which, York said, they will sell at cost.

Howard and Judy Brawn are still helping, though this is likely to be their final year, according to York. Luckily the two, who were finalizing the map on Tuesday, will provide a template for future organizers.

The Norse Hall is participating in the sale again and providing food, but according to York, higher prices at the meat counter means that the tri-tip sandwiches are being replaced with pulled pork sandwiches this year.

PIGYS is this weekend, Friday through Sunday, from 9-5 each day. Maps can be picked up on Puget Island at the ferry landing and near the south end of the Puget Island bridge.
