Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
Wahkiakum Mule golfer Elliot Haney struck the ball very well on the second day at the WIAA State Golf Championship in Richland at Columbia Pointe Golf Course.
Just like most of the eight kids from the southwest district, he never could capitalize on the greens. With the exception of the state champion Kenneth Sheldon of Ilwaco, 72/72, 144, the entire southwest district struggled.
Elliot shot 85/86 to finish 18th. The only other southwest district entrant to finish in the top 10 was Willapa Valley's Nicholas Betrozoff who finished eighth, 83/78.
On the first day of the tournament, Haney had a slow start with a 45 on the front nine and, despite a lethargic putter, he fired a 40 on the back nine for an 85 which tied him for 19th place and cleared the cut along with the best 20 players in the state to play a second day.
Colfax won the team title with with 57.5 team placement points followed by Ilwaco, 35, and Pomeroy, 33.
Elliot will now focus on an academic scholarship he has accepted to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania were he will major in Math and Computer Science. He hopes for a walk on try out with the golf team. Everybody please congratulate Elliot and wish him the best of luck.
