Down River Dispatches

News from Naselle:

Students will be out of school on Monday to celebrate Memorial Day.

There are a few final events coming up, as the 2015 school year comes to an end. At this time, it usually involves a tribute to the success of many of our students by recognizing them in front of their families and friends. One of the most important evenings is coming up on Tuesday, the 26th. In honor of all their hard work, students will be given awards for their achievements at the Evening of Excellence, held in the Commons at 7 p.m. Come join in the celebration.

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., the community is invited to listen to the musical achievements of the middle school and high school musicians at the annual concert. Then on Thursday, everyone is invited back for the elementary music program, also at 7 p.m. After all their hard work through the year, it’s time to show off their progress. Sounds like an entertaining week at the Naselle School.

The Naselle Congregational Church Martha Circle Trash n' Treasure Bazaar and Luncheon will be held on May 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Crafts, baked goods and gently used or new items will be available for sale.

The luncheon includes potato salad, hot dogs, chips, dessert and beverage for a suggested donation of $7 and will be served beginning at 11 a.m.

The Naselle Lutheran Church will be holding a Garage Sale on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Baked goods will also be sold, and the coffee will be hot.

On April 11 David Magnuson of Naselle lost his house, shop and all of his possessions in a devastating fire. He made it out unharmed along with his dog Tyson.

There will be a benefit dinner on May 30 at 5 p.m. at the Rosburg Hall. There is going to be barbecue style food served and a silent auction.

Anyone can donate an item to the silent auction, big or small, even baked goods.

Westend news:

On Saturday, you can begin your day with a delicious breakfast in Deep River at the American Legion Breakfast, from 8-11 a.m., sponsored by the Deep River Post 111. As always, all you can eat pancakes with sausage or ham, eggs cooked any way you want them, juice, milk and coffee. For more information, call 465-2234.

With this weekend celebrating Memorial Day, what better way to recognize our service men and women than by eating out at a venue that celebrates and recognizes their unselfish service to our country and our freedoms. All the proceeds from this event will be used by the Legion Post to benefit local veterans and the charitable organizations that recognize our community needs and our youth.

My most sincere thanks to our military men and women, past, present and future for your service to this wonderful country. For all your sacrifice and good will, and thank you as well to your families who share you with the world in our quest for maintaining freedom. We appreciate each and every one of you and thank you for your service.

The annual plant and bake sale, and soup lunch at the Grays River Valley Center last Saturday was a huge success. I want to thank each and every person who donated plants and who bought plants as well as those who came for lunch and made purchases. Steve Ramsay did a fine job once again with his preparation of northern bean with ham, chicken noodle and vegan veggie soups with breads and beverages. Everyone seemed to enjoy.

We still have a few plants available in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park, at very reasonable prices. Starting Thursday (today), many of the remaining plants will be on display in the hallway between the cafeteria and the Food Pantry, through the Memorial Day Weekend.

Our Free Friday Night Movie this week is the final chapter in the Middle Earth Saga. This recent release is rated PG-13, and is an outstanding show. Concessions are also available during the show, which begins at 7 p.m.

The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets each week at noon in the Rosburg Hall for a delicious meal prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteers.

On Thursdays a senior lunch is also served at noon in the Rosburg Hall and is sponsored by CAP.

Happy Birthday to Jais Burke, Bill Coop, Irene Blake, Linda Stover, Jim Larson, Hank Nelson, Carol Penttila, Dan Zimmerman, Robin Kent, Alex Bighill, Elizabeth Dalton, Alexander Stenvall, Debbie Lopez, Marc Gacke, Linda Cary, Cherilyn Phipps, Manuel Lopez, Darian Jacot, Makenna Busse, Darrylin Eastham, Katie Ashe, Clyde Sprague, Joyce Rangila and George Vernon. Wishing all of you a wonderful day.

Happy Anniversary to Rob and Wendy Crozier.

Happy Memorial Day to everyone.
