ALL MIXED UP--We had some sunshine, some showers and some wind last week and weekend, so it really depended on where you were as to what you were dealing with. At least we weren't dealing with the wild weather that parts of Oregon got, as it hailed and rained so hard and so much and so fast, that heavy manhole covers were coming up in mid-street; that was a pretty wild sight!
It's hard to believe but we'll be having another big holiday weekend coming up. Forecasters are saying the weather for the Memorial Day holiday looks promising but as usual, that can change in a heartbeat, so while we hope it's decent, be prepared and pack a jacket and umbrella with you just in case!
SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 21-27 are: Bryson Havens, Tina Vincent, Mitch Moonen, Jodi McClain, Klarah Sause, Lois Nelson, Natalie Emery, Bonnie Bigler, Tim Hoven, Julie Black, Kelly Hammond, Signe Peterson, Tiernan Cochran, Brenda Feguson, Donna Palmer, Mary Jo Brown, Katrina Pedersen Freeman and 67'er Linda Holland Toste. May you all have wonderful birthday celebrations!
Happy Anniversary wishes this week go out to Bill and Linda Mahitka, Wayne and Kay Cochran, Cindy and Bill Faubian and Tony and Carol Danker. Enjoy your special days!
FARMERS MARKET--You know you love your fresh veggies and if you don't have any on hand, then you'll want to head over to Puget Island and check out what the Stockhouses have on hand on Friday afternoons. Coming from Cathlamet, take a right onto West Birnie Slough road and just go past the School House junction a little ways and you'll see it off to the left. Call 360-560-3785 for more info or look them up online for all they have to offer.
OVER THE HILL--If you'd like to help out the American Legion, just head down to Deep River Saturday morning and enjoy a nice breakfast at their hall, which includes all you can eat pancakes with the fixings. Your participation helps support their local fund raising efforts for various local charities. For more information, contact Barbara Rose at 360-465-2234.
GOOD PLAY--When the students of Naselle put on a play and performed the Agatha Christy mysteries a couple of weeks ago, the quality of the production was not lost on John and Mary Gustafson, who thought they did an outstanding job. It's always great to see kids exposed to the theater and wind up putting on such an impressive show. Kudos to all those that took part in it, you've obvioulsy got some fans on this side of the hill!
SYMPATHIES--Our sympathies go out to the families of Dan Shanahan and Dixie Swart who passed away on May 10 and May 11, respectively. It seems we are losing a host of residents lately and we are sadly saying goodbye to way too many wonderful people. They will be missed.
C of L REMINDER--Leslie Monroe and Paula Olson, daughters of Elinor Ellison Bridenhagen, formerly of Puget Island, welcome you to share a memory of their mother with them on May 30, at the Norse Hall from noon to 4 p.m. This is a potluck gathering to celebrate Ellie's life, so the girls hope you can stop by even if it's for a short time. Elinor was the only daughter of the late, Bella (Pedersen) and Erling Ellison. I have heard from Bernice Tover Ellison and Dave Pedersen (son of Holger) from the Seattle area, and they'll be down this way to take part in remembering Ellie, who passed Jan. 25 at the age of 80.
NINE DAYS--It's hard to believe that the end of the month is just around the corner, and here's another quick reminder that the Wahkiakum Dollars for Scholars will be putting on their Tenth Annual Rods and Reels Rod Run on May 30. The Wahkiakum Fairgrounds and adjoining park will be the place to see a wealth of hot rods, street rods, classics and more, so don't miss seeing this great bunch of cars! While you're there, enter to win a number of fantastic prizes donated by our awesome sponsors, which are truly appreciated! Be sure to enjoy a tasty lunch served up by the WDFS crew and also some strawberry shortcake served up by the Buennagel family from Sharon's Pizza and More. It's going to be a great day with lots of music and fun for everyone! If you're still in doubt about the show, contact Lee Tischer at 360-430-4377 right away.
CHURCH BREAKFAST--The Skamokawa United Methodist Church wants to remind you to head over to their church, which is on the river side of West SR 4 on Vista Park Road on the morning of the car show as they'll be serving up a breakfast from 7-10 a.m. You'll be dished up some pancakes, eggs and sausage, with biscuits and gravy available as well, all for $8 for adults, $4 for children under 6. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the WDFS scholarship fund.
MORE CONGRATS--McKenna Spieth, great niece of Gene Healy & granddaughter of Donna Healy Palmer, has really been able to celebrate lately. I wrote last week that the Linfield Wildcats won the NCAA regional championships in Iowa, and they were pumped about that, but then they flew back to Iowa and won the "super regionals." They will be going into the final round of championship games back east, so we're cheering them on, as it seems they are on quite a roll. Here's to McKenna and her team winning it all!
GOOD TIME--Several members of the class of '67 met earlier this month and as usual, we had a good gabfest for a couple of hours. Those attending were David (Kathy) West, Elaine (Phil) Rolf, Judy Bergman, Pam Lazor, Keith (Karen) Lawrence, Dale Jacobson, Mary Toste and yours truly, Kay Chamberlain. Beings several of us were not going to be able to make the June gathering, it was decided to just skip it, so there will be no June get-together.
However, in July we're going to forego the usual "second Friday" meeting date, and instead, we'll get together on Bald Eagle Day, which is Saturday, July 18. We just happen to have a classmate who lives right there in town, so we will all meet up at Dale Jacobson's place down near the Marina on 2nd Street at 1 p.m. This will be a potluck gathering and we hope all of you 67'ers will come and enjoy the BED parade on Main Street, do a little shopping at the vendors who line the streets and then come down to Dale's for lunch and a lot of chatter! We understand that Sharon McKie is supposed to be in town that week so we hope she'll be able to join all of us at that time.
We thought that while we were together, we'd put together a list of foods that we're going to be having, so if you're not on the list and you want to show up, just fill in around this proposed menu: Keith and Karen: ribs and salsa; Elaine and Phil: veggie tray and choc. sheet cake; Judy: a potato salad; Pam: a Spring/Summer salad; Kay: some chicken; David and Kathy: paper plates and plastic utensils and Dale will have a big tent and provide the cups and tables. Bringing your own camp chair would be ideal along with your choice of beverage. I'll keep you posted on any new developments. Please spread the word!
SAFE HOLIDAY--Here's wishing you and yours will have a safe and happy Memorial weekend. If you're traveling, be extra cautious and it doesn't hurt to leave those headlights on day or night, as there are a lot of very shady areas along SR 4 if the sun is shining brightly and of course, at dusk, it's much easier to see a vehicle with its lights on.
Wherever you go or whatever you do, please don't forget what this holiday is all about. While Veteran's Day is for remembering all those that have served in the armed forces, both past and present, Memorial Day is for remembering all those that served their country, but who are no longer with us. God Bless them every one; may we never forget their sacrifices.
